Room – Journal #3

Jack’s mother tried to teach Jack what the outside world is like without trying to make him feel suspicious or feel isolated from the rest of the world. As Jack became older, his curiosity also started to build. Jack begins to ask his mother many questions that she is expected to answer. Jack’s mother explains to her son that she does not like the room and that she would rather be outside with him, however this leaves Jack very confused. If I were Jack’s mother I would have done the same thing as his mother did. I would not tell my child about the outside world and just like his mother did, I would try to create a world for them inside the room. If Jack had been told about the outside world from the beginning, he would have felt the desperation to escape like Ma did, but because he did not know he was able to use his imaginations and live happily and comfortably with what he was provided. Realizing and knowing the reality can be often cruelsome, and at times not knowing or realizing the reality is better for the individual. If Jack knew about the outside world, I do not think him or his mother would have survived in the same way that they did.

There are many examples of when not knowing the reality is better for an individual. In high school, there are constantly many rumours that go around due to many people who make early judgements on others. For an individual to stay strong and remain to have self-confidence, it is often better if they do not hear about the rumours that they are mentioned in or what is being said about them. People may think that creating a wall between yourself and the outside world is acting immature or naive, however I believe there is always times where an individual needs to do so in order to enjoy their life without any disruptions or hatred.
